Best time of year to clear land

You can clear land most of the year here. Some seasons are easier on the ground, and a few have rules worth knowing about.

Winter

Frozen ground carries the machine and disturbs the soil less. Wet areas that are hard to reach in summer open up. With the leaves down you can see the lay of the land, fences and rocks. Snow depth can slow the work, so call early.

Late summer and fall

Ground is usually drier and firmer. Buckthorn is easy to spot in fall because it holds its green leaves after native trees drop theirs. Fall is also when follow-up treatment of stumps is commonly done.

Spring

Thawing ground is soft and rutting is a concern, so we may wait for it to firm up. Spring is also nesting season for many birds, so we plan around that when we can.

Early summer and oak wilt

In Wisconsin, state guidance generally advises against cutting or wounding oaks from about mid April through July because of oak wilt. If your land has oaks, tell us. We can schedule around it or leave them standing.

How to pick a month

  • Need it done before a build or a planting date? Work backward from that date and call early.
  • Want the least ground disturbance? Choose frozen or dry ground.
  • Clearing invasive brush? Plan the follow-up treatment too.

The best answer comes from the walkthrough. We look at the land and tell you what the season allows.
